Process Overview

Impact extrusion is a metalworking process used to form hollow metal parts with high strength and accuracy. In this process, a slug of metal is lubricated and placed within a die cavity. A punch then strikes the slug with immense pressure, forcing it to flow and take the shape of the die, creating the desired hollow part.

  • Less Raw Material Required

Virtually all the metal in the slug is formed into the finished part. Studies show material savings of 40-70% when compared to machining.

  • Increased Strength

Significantly increases tensile strength and yield strength, depending on the alloy, amount of movement and deformation.

  • Reduction In Machining

Extruding precise shapes with controlled tolerances, finish machining is significantly reduced or eliminated.

  • Assembly Elimination

Replacement of assemblies with single piece components
