Metal Injection Molding Process

The MIM process begins with mixing fine metal powders with binders. The mixture is then extruded to form the raw material or “feedstock”. The feedstock is injected into a mold, like a plastic injection molding die, creating the “green part”. Next, de-binding takes place using any one of a variety of methods, including a catalytic process, thermal furnaces, or water leaving a fragile and porous component. The components are now referred to as “brown parts”. The brown parts are sintered in furnaces at temperatures close to their melting point to allow metallurgical bonding of the powders to take place. At this stage the volume is reduced by about 20%, the pores close and the desired chemical and physical properties are obtained.

  • Design Flexibility

    Combining the design flexibility of plastic injection molding with the material properties of metal, parts can be designed with intricate internal structures, thin walls, and complex shapes while maintaining tight tolerances. Multiple components can be sintered into a single part. Allows for fine tuning of magnetic and electrical properties. 

  • Cost effective

    MIM is highly automated reducing labor costs.  It generates very little scrap, converting 95-98% of material into usable metal parts.  With the proper part geometry MIM can be less expensive than machining, investment casting, and stamping in the long run.

  • Quality

    The powders used are highly consistent in particle size and composition, reducing variability in final components and offering good surface finishesThe highly automated process offers repeatability and tight tolerance control.

  • Density & Strength

    Parts are produced with a high degree of density, resulting in excellent mechanical and chemical properties.
